Prevention campaign to raise awareness of oral cancer in Schleswig-Holstein (completed)

Although tumours of the oral cavity and pharynx occur comparatively frequently in Germany, with around 13,000 new diagnoses per year, and the 5-year survival rate is rather low, awareness of this type of cancer is very low among the population. Studies point to a considerable lack of information regarding the existence, symptoms, risk factors and prevention options for this tumour. Based on the results of a representative study for Schleswig-Holstein, an awareness campaign with comprehensive scientific evaluation was designed in Schleswig-Holstein as a model project for Germany. The campaign ran from April 2012 to December 2014 and closely interlinked setting-related and interpersonal communication with (mass) media communication channels. The project is led by Prof Dr Katrin Hertrampf, University Medical Centre Schleswig-Holstein, Campus Kiel, and funded by the Friede Springer Foundation.
