What can I expect to learn in the Bachelor of Arts Media Management?
The bachelor's degree in Media Management at the IJK is the first choice for committed and motivated school graduates as well as professional practitioners interested in a scientifically sound, management-related media degree. The training offers profound knowledge about the structures and functions of the media system and its actors. Methodological training is of great importance: as part of your studies at the IJK, you will learn how to apply empirical social research methods in a targeted manner and how to use scientific knowledge for the challenges of media management practice. Program Content:
The Bachelor Program Media Management is composed of the following learning units and a finals thesis:
- Introduction
In this module you will be given an overview of the subject areas of media and communication science, empirical social research, media economics and media management as well as the basics of scientific work. The module prepares for the special requirements of social science-oriented media management studies.
- Media System and Development
Here you will learn about the historical, economic, political and legal foundations of the media. This should enable you to understand the specific structure of national and international media and to explore political backgrounds in order to better plan and control future developments.
- Basics of Communication Science
This module provides basic knowledge of four key areas of communication science:
Media content: You will acquire knowledge of the content of the most important media.
Media provider: You will learn about the most important processes involved in creating information, orientation and entertainment offers.
Media usage: You gain knowledge about the use of mass media and user research.
Media impact: You gain insights into current issues and methods of impact research.
- Strategic Communication
Within this module, we provide an overview of the most important theories, approaches and results from the areas of public relations, marketing and advertising, and deepen them in exemplary areas or using concrete practical examples.
- Theory and Practice of Media Management
The aim of this module is to teach the basics of media and management science. You acquire knowledge about the economic and social background of media as well as about central tasks of media management (product management, marketing, controlling, strategy, entrepreneurship etc.).
- Basics of Business Economics and Media Law
Four modules are bundled within this module, which provide you with fundamental business management knowledge. In addition, you will be introduced to relevant basics and current developments in media law.
- Quantitative Methods and Data Analysis
Within this module, we practice the most important quantitative data collection processes with you. In addition to the survey and content analysis, media research is also addressed as a relevant field of practice. This module enables you to independently develop and use survey instruments (e.g. questionnaires) at a high scientific level. In order to draw meaningful conclusions from market, opinion and media research data, you also need the ability to evaluate them in a targeted manner. In this module, we therefore provide you with the most important methods for analyzing empirical data in addition to quantitative survey methods. In addition to the basics of statistics, the basic strategies of data interpretation are addressed. Here you will learn how to use analysis methods independently and how to prepare and present statistical data in a meaningful and understandable way.
- Qualitative Methods and Data Analysis
This module teaches you in-depth methodological knowledge. This includes theoretical and practical knowledge of qualitative research as well as advanced knowledge of a selected method. Important terms, basics and areas of application as well as practical application are learned.
- Workshop Seminar
In order to understand the practical aspects about media research better, you will engage in an empirical study of your own. In groups, you will put to use the theoretical and empirical knowledge you have collected, apply a scientific method learned from previous modules to a contemporary, relevant topic of today's media and evaluate the results.
- Professional Fields of Media Management
As part of your studies, you will gain valuable practical experience in two mandatory internships. To this end, the IJK cooperates with numerous companies and organizations that regularly employ interns from our bachelor's program. The associated IJK practice colloquium offers space for the discussion of initial practical work experience and represents an information exchange for your internships.
- Tutorial and Projects
Within this module you have the opportunity to use and develop your study-related knowledge in the organization of courses, research projects and events.
- Exam Module
At the end of your studies, you have the opportunity to work intensively scientifically on a topic of your choice from the field of media management. Further components are final exams, in which you have to prove your knowledge and skills acquired during your studies.
